UK-based Nigerian woman shot dead after returning to the country to bury her mother
Gunmen suspected of being bandits shot and killed a Nigerian woman who had returned to the country for her mother's burial along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. She was allegedly killed in front of her children, Sahara Reporters said.
Bolanle Aworetan Omojuwa, the victim, entertained her loved ones at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, to commemorate her late mother's life.
Later, she went to travel to Oyo State following the funeral reception, 1st News said. While traveling with her two children on the Lagos/Ibadan expressway on Thursday, she was fatally shot in her automobile by robbers in the Guru Maharaji village.
Friends and old classmates have taken to social media to express their condolences. Alumni of the University of Ado-Ekiti, now Ekiti State University, have also used WhatsApp to express their grief at the death of one of their own.
One of them wrote, "They say we never die, we just change form and continue our existence in another realm. If this is true, I'm sadly mourning you with my tears. It would have been [a] joy to our world if we weren't cut down. Bola Aworetan (CO99, Pol Sci) came home from the UK to bury her mom last week or so, and same last week, little did we know she won't return to the UK again to continue her life.
"This most adorable pretty woman was shot dead in her car in front of her children at Guru Maharaji this past Thursday; unwilling forcing her to escort her mum to the great unknown. Your death is too gripping for me. I'm bewildered and I don't know how to mourn you..."
It's unclear why the gunmen shot her to death.
Meanwhile, a 25-year-old woman was shot by police officers in Ojota, Lagos, as they attempted to disperse Yoruba nation rallyists.
Jumoke Oyeleke, the victim, was laid to rest in the Atan Cemetery in Yaba on Friday at 11 a.m. local time.
PM News Nigeria, citing Lagos State Police Command, said no live bullets were fired during the protest.
One of the Yoruba Nation demonstrators, Tajudeen Bakare, was later charged by the police with killing Jumoke.
The charge was later dropped due to a lack of evidence.
The 25-year-old was selling soft drinks in a facility near the protest grounds when she was shot.
The Lagos State government established a coroner's inquest to investigate Jumoke's death in order to figure out what caused her death.
The coronary inquest's first sitting began on August 2, with Jumoke's mother and boss in attendance.
It was postponed until Sept. 6.
