Corruption and Oppression: How Nigerian Security Agents Have Turned From Protectors To Predators
The Nigerian security personnels have broken more of their own laws than they have kept. They have breached every known laws that should govern a sane world. In this part of the world, those working with elites, as they call themselves, believe they are above the law and can violate citizens' rights without facing consequences.
Just a few days ago, we all saw the news of how a staff of the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was gunned down on attempting to break into a man's home at midnight without formal awareness, and without any court warrant or identification, all against normal procedures. This act was another attempt to intimidate and extort money from the man, as they often do to civilians.
Nigeria has become so corrupt that even her creator, the British government would be ashamed of their own creation as the UK conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch stated clearly. Yes, Britain committed a grave mistake when they created the entity now known as Nigeria, but Kemi Badenoch has openly said that Britain should not be like Nigeria that destroys life and destiny.
Nigerians are exhausted by the misconduct of security operatives who claim their mandate is to protect the country from crime. Yet, behind the scenes they are the promoters of misconduct and disorder. The Nigeria security operatives enjoy bullying and humiliating the very citizens they claim to protect, especially citizens of the East. Yes! It is well-known that most cases of police brutality, intimidation and extortion are targeted at the youths of the Southeast (Igbo youths).
The police do not care about the resilient spirit of the Igbo man or positively view successful young Igbo men. The Nigerian police lack respect for the industrious and entrepreneurship nature that keeps an Igbo man outstanding, instead they are often labeled as criminals or accused of fraud. These accusations are not based on facts but are mere excuses to extort money from Igbo youths. Those who dare to resist these inhumane acts are often kidnapped by security officers and whisked away, never to be seen again by their families.
Family Writers Press International(FWPI) is joining a million of other voices to call on the international community to investigate the Nigerian police and military, as many believe they are part of a larger plan to terrorize and destabilize Igbo communities, fostering instability in the region. It is noteworthy that a reputable Human Rights Organization, InterSociety, asked the president of Nigeria to prosecute trigger happy officers after finding them culpable, but the president refused thereby encouraging their reckless killing spree. Therefore, the international community must, this time, come to the rescue of Biafrans who are victims of state sanctioned genocide.
