Releasing Nnamdi Kanu is the Right Thing to Do - Governor Mbah
The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has once again emphasized his request for the Federal Government to free the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, characterizing it as "the correct course of action."
Mbah made this appeal yesterday during a question-and-answer session that followed his presentation on "Leadership and Transformation" at the Showcase Session of the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference in Enugu.
In response to a participant who encouraged him to persist in his advocacy for Kanu’s release, the governor stated that his initial meeting with President Bola Tinubu after taking office was focused on the matter of Kanu’s detention.
He said, “My first visit to the President was about Nnamdi Kanu. I believe that the right thing to do is to release him. Hopefully, that will be done soon.”
The governor remarked that the sit-at-home directive that was previously implemented in the Southeast on Mondays as a result of Kanu’s imprisonment has concluded in Enugu State, crediting this development to his administration’s initiatives aimed at reinstating normalcy.
“We met a situation where people were compelled to stay at home every Monday. Now, people trade in Ogbete and other markets in peace on Mondays. Monday sit-at-home has ended in Enugu, as you (lawyers) can see. You can also move around and investigate,” he explained.
Mbah additionally discussed some of the strategies his administration utilizes to address developmental challenges and create opportunities within the state.
Kanu is presently undergoing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges related to terrorism, which he has refuted.
