The Nigerian Students' Association calls for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu has been in detention since June 2021, after being abducted in Kenya and subsequently extradited to Nigeria, an event that sparked widespread protests and demands for his release.

In a statement released on Tuesday, co-signed by NANS President Comrade Isah Atiku Abubakar and Public Relations Officer Comrade Orowole Eniola, the association expressed disappointment that, despite several court rulings that have granted Kanu bail, the federal government has persistently failed to act on them.

"We understand that the President believes in the rule of law and the unity of the country," NANS said. "No section of the country should feel marginalised or be treated like second-class citizens," as Kanu is already being treated.

The declaration characterized Kanu as "a national asset to the country and should be permitted to make his contribution."

NANS acknowledged that its appeal for Kanu's release has garnered support from numerous organizations, including Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, along with governors and National Assembly representatives from the Southeast region.

The student organization additionally sought a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to officially present their requests and suggest a political resolution to the Kanu matter, highlighting the significance of national unity.

The statement partially stated: "The National Association of Nigerian Students at a meeting held in Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba unanimously agreed and requested the President of NANS, Comr. Atiku Isah to write the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces to request an audience and present the demand of the Nigerian students.

"NANS hereby appeals for the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu by recommending a political solution to the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, because we understand that the President believes in the rule of law, and the unity of the country.”
