Court to Hear Urgent Plea for Nnamdi Kanu’s Transfer to National Hospital Amid Health Crisis

Today Being Monday, September 15, 2025, the Federal High Court in Abuja will hear an urgent application by Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, seeking transfer from Department of State Services (DSS) custody to the National Hospital, Abuja, for critical medical treatment.

Filed on September 3 by Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), the motion cites a “worrisome decline” in Kanu’s health. Vacation judge, Justice Musa Liman, allowed the hearing during the court’s recess, emphasizing the importance of Kanu’s right to health. “The right to health is as important as the right to life,” Liman stated, scheduling the hearing and directing Kanu’s counsel, Uchenna Njoku (SAN), to serve the DSS.

Emmanuel Kanu, the IPOB leader’s brother, stated in an affidavit that Kanu has been experiencing persistent weakness and body pains. A medical team led by Emeritus Prof. Austin A.C. Agaji conducted tests in August, revealing kidney and liver issues, dangerously low potassium levels, and a swelling under Kanu’s armpit requiring urgent investigation. The team recommended immediate transfer to the National Hospital, but Agabi noted the DSS has not responded to their letter.

Kanu, detained since his 2021 abduction in Kenya, faces terrorism charges before Justice James Omotosho. His legal team, unable to secure a bail hearing before the court’s vacation, argues that transferring Kanu for medical care will not prejudice the DSS. The application, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, lists 11 grounds emphasizing Kanu’s deteriorating health and right to life. The court will hear arguments from both sides and rule on the transfer request today.
