DSS sues Sowore, Facebook, X to court over alleged cyberbullying of Tinubu
The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a lawsuit against Omoyele Sowore, Nigerian activist and SaharaReporters publisher, accusing him of cyberbullying Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by referring to him as a “criminal” on social media.
The case, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja under suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025, also names Meta Platforms Inc. (owners of Facebook) and X Corp. (formerly Twitter) as defendants.
According to the DSS, Sowore refused to remove the post after being asked to do so, prompting the agency to initiate legal action.
The DSS alleges that Sowore violated the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act of 2024 by sharing false information on his X and Facebook accounts on August 25 and 26, 2025.
The posts included a message accusing the president of lying about corruption in Nigeria, which the DSS claims was knowingly false and intended to provoke public unrest and damage the president’s reputation.
The charges cite violations of Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes Act, Section 375 of the Criminal Code for defamation, and Section 59 of the same Code for spreading false information with the intent to cause fear and public disturbance.
Sowore is expected to appear in court for arraignment following the filing of the charges.
