Peaceful Dismemberment of Nigeria: An Inevitable Diplomatic Decision
The peaceful dismemberment of Nigeria remains an immense and inevitable decision; one that could bring diplomatic success and stability across West Africa.
For years, the Nigerian government has continued its brutal clampdown on the peaceful movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), criminalizing freedom agitation and silencing voices calling for justice. Yet, these actions have not weakened the genuine resolve of the Biafran people.
For over a decade, IPOB has consistently called for a United Nations–supervised referendum to allow the people of Biafra to decide their own future and coexistence with Nigeria.
Under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu, IPOB has pursued the restoration of Biafra through lawful and civilized means, guided by discipline, structure, and respect for international norms. The movement’s principle of command and control has remained one of its most defining features, ensuring order and accountability across its ranks.
Today, it has become evident to every discerning Nigerian that the truths Mazi Nnamdi Kanu spoke, truths the government chose to suppress through propaganda and blackmail are unfolding before everyone’s eyes. Rather than engaging IPOB constructively, the government resorted to recruiting infiltrators in a futile attempt to discredit one of Africa’s most disciplined and peaceful freedom movements.
Nigeria’s political elites have repeatedly shied away from civic engagement with IPOB, largely out of fear of facing its intellectually grounded leadership. Instead of dialogue, intimidation and suppression have been their chosen tools. But as current realities unfold, the same truths Kanu once declared are now confronting the nation—painfully and undeniably.
In one of his broadcasts, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu warned that the Nigerian government would waste its strength chasing peaceful Biafrans while terrorists overrun the North, Abuja, and the West. Today, the headlines bear him out; terrorists now threaten to bomb the National Assembly. It is both pathetic and tragic.
Nigeria’s governance system, deeply influenced by British legacy and corruption, has reduced many once-revered institutions; academia, the judiciary, and the civil service—into shadows of mediocrity. Even with professors, lawyers, and so-called luminaries at the helm, illegalities and corruption remain the order of the day—a clear sign of a failed state.
Whether one hates or admires IPOB, its disciplined leadership and ideological clarity cannot be denied. The movement’s commitment to a non-violent struggle; anchored in international law, the United Nations Charter, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights remains exemplary.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu chose the pen over the bullet, a powerful symbol of intellectual resistance. Before Justice James Omotosho, his self-defense demonstrated the essence of self-determination: the courage to lead from the front.
A United Nations–supervised referendum remains the only peaceful and lawful path forward. The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will not preserve Nigeria; it will hasten its collapse.
We, therefore, call on President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to unconditionally release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and initiate a civic dialogue with IPOB leadership to organize a peaceful, internationally monitored referendum—so the people of Biafra may freely decide their future.
