IPOB Abia State Concludes End-of-Year General Meeting with Focus on Welfare and Call for Leader's Release
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Abia State convened its annual end-of-year General Meeting on December 15, 2025, drawing coordinators, state executives, media representatives, and members from across the state. The gathering emphasized themes of compassion, unity, and remembrance while highlighting the group's ongoing welfare initiatives amid challenges to the Biafran self-determination movement.
In line with IPOB's established tradition, the meeting featured special outreach to widows of members who lost their lives in the struggle. These women, along with those whose husbands are missing or detained by Nigerian authorities, received food items and financial aid donated by various IPOB zones and units in Abia State. Organizers described the support as a gesture to affirm that the sacrifices of fallen members are honored and that their families remain integral to the IPOB community.
One notable moment involved a member who lost a leg during a past peaceful protest after being shot by Nigerian security forces. He appealed for help to replace his deteriorated prosthetic limb, and attendees responded with immediate financial contributions to address his needs.
The meeting also served as a platform to praise the IPOB leadership and Directorate of State (DOS) for their resilience in advancing the Biafran cause despite significant obstacles. Participants reiterated demands for the unconditional release of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whose ongoing detention—following a recent life imprisonment sentence on terrorism charges has drawn widespread criticism from supporters and human rights observers.
This event comes amid heightened regional tensions surrounding Kanu's case, with recent diplomatic efforts by Abia State Governor Alex Otti—including visits to Kanu and discussions with federal authorities—aimed at securing his freedom. IPOB maintains its commitment to non-violent advocacy while underscoring internal solidarity through such welfare programs.
The press release was issued by the Abia State IPOB Media Warriors.
