‎Prison Insecurity: Risks Surrounding Kanu's Custody In Far-Away Sokoto, And The Threat To The Already Fragile Nigeria's Unity

‎The imprisonment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in far-away Sokoto by the Nigerian government represents a complex intersection of Nigeria's penchant to political persecution, insensitivity to security challenges, fuelling ethnic tensions, and gross neglect to already fragile state of national unity.

‎In recent times, the issue of prison insecurity in Nigeria has resurfaced across board, drawing attention to the complex dynamics surrounding the safety of high-profile prisoners, particularly the IPOB leader in terrorism fraught environment of Sokoto State, Northwestern Nigeria.

‎The choice of Sokoto prison, located far from Kanu’s region and away from Abuja by the Nigerian government, tele-guided by the Sokoto caliphate, raises significant concerns not only for his safety but also for the broader implications his safety has for  Nigeria's national unity.

‎This development has become emblematic of deeper fractures within the country, raising critical questions about prison security, political persecution and the consequences of institutionalized injustice across regional and ethnic lines.

‎ Risks of Kanu's Custody in Sokoto

‎The decision to incarcerate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Sokoto prison—which is situated in the Terrorism invested northwestern part of Nigeria—raises several security concerns.

‎First, the distance from Kanu's home in the southeast or Abuja not only complicates visitation but also increases the potential for suspicion over his safety among his followers and supporters.

‎The possibility of government sponsored false flag prison breaks, riots, or assassination attempts becomes more pronounced when high-profile prisoners are placed far from their base of support where their safety are not plausibly assured to the public.

‎In addition, Sokoto has its numerous security challenges, primarily comprising issues related to Fulani banditry, Ransom Kidnapping and terrorism, which have plagued the state and the entire northern region. The existing tension within the region may be exacerbated, leading to terrorists exploiting Kanu's high-profile status to carry out criminal attacks at the facility. Should any attacks occur targeting the prison or during Kanu's transport, it could lead to devastating consequences not only for him, the officials, other inmates in the prison facility but also for the larger Nigerian entity; national stability.

‎Again, the custodial choice and management of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Sokoto prison has far reaching implications that extend beyond his individual safety and security. His imprisonment in a region that is already fraught with ethnic and ongoing religious strife underscores the deliberate collusion with jihadist terrorists by the Nigerian government to alienate, persecute and silence not just Mazi Nnamdi Kanu but every Judeo-Christian voice and population in Nigeria, further indicting the Nigerian government's complicity and efforts at emboldening the jihadists in carrying out more Christian genocide across Nigeria.

‎For many concerned individuals, this decision of sending Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to Sokoto prison despite several other well secured prison facilities across the south and Abuja, symbolizes the Nigerian government's disregard for regional sensitivities and highlights the persistent neglect of the southeasts' inclusion in terms of national dialogue by the Nigerian state, further deepening the already polarized polity across the country and shaking the foundation of Nigeria's self-acclaimed Unity.

‎Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's custody in Sokoto prison undoubtedly poses substantial risks that extend beyond him as an individual but also touches more on the very fabric of Nigerian unity should his safety be unguaranteed. Therefore, addressing the challenges of prison insecurity and ensuring the safety of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in far away Sokoto State, northwestern region behoves on the Nigerian state. The international community and the Nigerian people must hold Nigerian government accountable for the safety of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto prison facility as his well-being and security is tantamount to dictating the stability and cohesion of Nigeria as an entity.
