Biafra’s Right to Self-Determination: Why A UN-Supervised Referendum Is Imperative As Freedom Draws Near

Sovereignty is the supreme authority of a state or people over their own territory and affairs; allowing them to govern themselves, make laws, and maintain internal order without external interference.

For over a decade, the Mazi Nnamdi Kanu led Indigenous People Of Biafra(IPOB) Movement has peacefully advocated for the separation of Biafra from Nigeria, invoking every international principles, conventions, charters, and laws that uphold the right to self-determination.

Moreso, despite that IPOB has been peacefully calling for a UN-supervised referendum, the movement's members have faced persecution, intimidation, blackmail, brutality, and even death.

Self-determination for the people of Biafra is the process through which IPOB leads the quest to establish Biafra as a sovereign state with its own government; an undeniable right under international law.

The case of Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since established a functioning, democratic, and peaceful state, is instructive. Its legitimacy in seeking recognition, upheld by the Israeli government recently, demonstrates the principles IPOB invokes in their peaceful campaign.

Biafra’s struggle for freedom from 1967–1970 has been legitimate, and today, the quest for self-determination remains equally legitimate. IPOB’s nonviolent approach and adherence to democratic principles have made the prospect of Biafra’s freedom imminent.

Therefore, the call for a UN-supervised referendum is a genuine and legal pathway that Nigeria, as a democratic state, should respect.

It is the right of the Biafran people to seek freedom; a right IPOB has championed for over a decade.

By following every principle of self-determination and pursuing a peaceful referendum, IPOB has ensured the legitimacy of the movement and nothing should stand in the way if Biafra restoration, soonest.
