"Igbo Islam": A Constructed Narrative Intended To Gaslight And Destabilize The Southeast

The concept of “Igbo Islam” is increasingly being promoted as a tool to psychologically and politically destabilize the Southeast. Historically and culturally, Islam and its extremist offshoots are alien to Ndigbo. The indigenous Igbo population has been predominantly rooted in Judeo-Christian religious practices, then those of the indigenous way of worship(Omenala).

The recent claims of systematic persecution of Igbo Muslims appear less organic and more aligned with a broader political agenda, one seemingly designed to attract international attention from countries such as Türkiye, Iran, and Afghanistan. This narrative risks being exploited to reframe the Southeast as a potential terror hub, particularly in the context of global reactions to reported attacks, displacement, and faith-based violence against Christian populations in parts of Nigeria.

The phrase “Igbo Muslim” itself is increasingly being deployed as a psychological construct rather than a sociocultural reality. It appears intended to justify insecurity, abductions, and sustained turmoil in the Southeast. Previous and ongoing attempts to radicalize or hijack the Igbo self-determination movement have failed. As a result, a new strategy seems to be emerging; one that involves recruiting a small group of individuals to project an Islamic identity in order to create confusion, provoke instability, and sustain insecurity-related profiteering.

It is difficult to separate this development from the broader reality that insecurity in the Southeast is largely state-enabled. With the complicity of certain political actors, many innocent Igbo youths are being detained, tortured, or dying in both covert and overt detention facilities across Nigeria. This raises a fundamental question: how can a people already under severe repression be the same ones accused of incubating religious extremism?

The evidence suggests that what is unfolding is not a religious evolution, but a calculated attempt to weaponize identity against the Southeast for political, economic, and strategic gains.

Recently, the true origins a few persons championing this charade were uncovered not to be Igbo. Meaning that the propagators of this agenda are importing individuals from other tribes to champion this frivolous claim on Igbo soil.

This, therefore, is a wake-up call to everyone indigenous to Ala-Igbo, to understand the extent the enemies of Igbo race can go. Let this also serve as a timely notice to the free world and persons of conscience, that the Igbo is not against any religion, but will not allow blood-suckers have their ways in the region, in the name of religion.
