UK MP Declares War on Trump: 'He's an International Gangster – Time to Stop Appeasing the Bully'
In a fiery parliamentary address, Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the UK's Liberal Democrats and MP for Kingston and Surbiton, launched a blistering condemnation of US President Donald Trump, branding him an "international gangster" and the "most corrupt president the United States has ever seen." The remarks came amid escalating tensions over Trump's aggressive pursuit of Greenland and his threats to impose punitive tariffs on the United Kingdom and several European allies.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Davey accused Trump of acting like a bully on the global stage, threatening the sovereignty of Denmark (an ally) over Greenland, endangering the future of NATO, and now wielding economic weapons against close partners. "President Trump is acting like an international gangster," Davey declared. "Threatening to trample over the sovereignty of an ally, threatening the end of NATO altogether, and now threatening to hit our country and seven European allies with outrageous, damaging tariffs unless he gets his hands on Greenland."
Davey described the moment as "incredibly grave" for the United Kingdom, Europe, and the world, arguing that Trump's actions represent an unprovoked attack on British businesses, jobs, livelihoods, and national security. He highlighted the irony of Trump's recent praise for the "special relationship" between the US and UK, stating that such ties are now "nearly in tatters" due to the president's behavior.
The Liberal Democrat leader was particularly critical of the UK government's approach under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, accusing it of a year-long policy of appeasement toward Trump. "For a year now, the Prime Minister has tried a policy of appeasing Trump, flattering him, fawning over him, refusing to stand up to him," Davey said, adding that this strategy has "failed" and been tested "to destruction."
Davey painted Trump as a classic bully who believes he can seize whatever he desires through force or coercion. He dismissed any notion of compromise through flattery or concessions, sarcastically suggesting the only alternatives to standing firm are "bribing him with a new jet perhaps, or a few billion in his crypto account." Instead, he called for the UK to unite with European allies to confront the president directly and force him to back down.
"The only people cheering him on are Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping," Davey noted, receiving audible support ("Hear, hear") from fellow MPs. He urged a clear-eyed recognition of Trump's character and a shift to resolute opposition, emphasizing collective European strength over individual concessions.
Davey's intervention marks a sharp escalation in UK political rhetoric toward the Trump administration, positioning the Liberal Democrats as vocal opponents of what they see as reckless US foreign and economic policy. As tensions continue to rise, calls for unified European resistance to the tariff threats and Greenland demands are likely to intensify.
