Trump Declares 'Justice Served': Ayatollah Khamenei Eliminated in Historic Joint Operation

The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader since 1989, has been confirmed by Iranian state media following a major joint military operation conducted by the United States and Israel on February 28, 2026. The 86-year-old cleric was killed in an airstrike on his office in Tehran during the opening hours of what U.S. President Donald J. Trump described as "Operation Epic Fury."

In a statement posted on Truth Social, President Trump announced the development in stark terms:

"Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is dead. This is not only Justice for the people of Iran, but for all Great Americans, and those people from many Countries throughout the World, that have been killed or mutilated by Khamenei and his gang of bloodthirsty THUGS. He was unable to avoid our Intelligence and Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems and, working closely with Israel, there was not a thing he, or the other leaders that have been killed along with him, could do. This is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country. We are hearing that many of their IRGC, Military, and other Security and Police Forces, no longer want to fight, and are looking for Immunity from us. As I said last night, 'Now they can have Immunity, later they only get Death!' Hopefully, the IRGC and Police will peacefully merge with the Iranian Patriots, and work together as a unit to bring back the Country to the Greatness it deserves. That process should soon be starting in that, not only the death of Khamenei but the Country has been, in only one day, very much destroyed and, even, obliterated. The heavy and pinpoint bombing, however, will continue, uninterrupted throughout the week or, as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD!

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

 PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP"

The strikes, which began predawn on Saturday, targeted key Iranian leadership figures, military installations, ballistic missile sites, air defenses, and other strategic assets. Iranian state media and officials have also confirmed the deaths of several high-ranking figures alongside Khamenei, including IRGC Commander-in-Chief Major General Mohammad Pakpour and top adviser Ali Shamkhani. Reports indicate dozens of other senior officials may have been killed in the coordinated assaults.

Iranian authorities declared a 40-day period of public mourning for Khamenei, described in state broadcasts as a "martyr," with tearful announcements on national television. The government has announced seven days of public holidays and vowed retaliation, with the IRGC promising what it called the "most ferocious offensive operation in history" against U.S. and Israeli targets.

President Trump framed the operation as a decisive step toward eliminating threats from Iran's regime and opening the door for regime change. He urged Iranian security forces to defect or seek immunity, suggesting that ongoing U.S.-Israeli bombing would persist until "peace throughout the Middle East and, indeed, the world" is achieved. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed similar sentiments, stating the strikes aimed to create conditions for the Iranian people to "take their destiny into their own hands."

The strikes have caused significant disruption in Iran, with reports of civilian casualties, panic in Tehran (including long lines at stores and gas stations), and retaliatory Iranian missile launches toward Israel and U.S. positions in the region. International reactions have been mixed: Russia condemned the attacks as "unprovoked aggression," while some U.S. allies expressed support for countering Iranian threats.

Khamenei's death leaves Iran's leadership in uncertainty, with no clear immediate successor named under the current constitutional framework. The Supreme Leader's role, which combines religious and political authority, has been central to the Islamic Republic's governance for decades.

As military operations continue, the coming days will test whether the power vacuum leads to internal upheaval, as Trump and others hope, or to a hardened regime response amid widespread mourning and calls for revenge. The full scope of casualties and strategic impacts remains under assessment amid ongoing hostilities.
