IPOB Lawyer Ejiofor Reaffirms Pro Bono Work for Kanu, Threatens Suit Over False Allegations

Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who previously served as lead counsel for detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and remains the organization's lawyer, has issued a public statement denying allegations that he received payment for his legal services and threatening legal action against two individuals making the claims.

In a post dated March 5, Ejiofor reiterated that his representation of Kanu was provided strictly on a pro bono basis. He stated that he has publicly affirmed this position repeatedly over at least the past three years, and no verifiable evidence of any payment has ever been produced despite open challenges.

Ejiofor said the allegations resurfaced from individuals who claimed to have visited Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre. He specifically named Obinna (also known as Methuselah Nwanne Chineke) and Immanuel Joshbriliem Joshua (also known as Bishop JCI), accusing them of claiming on various platforms to possess proof of payments for his services.

He further described as "mischievous" and "absurd" their additional allegation that he authored a petition against Kanu's pending appeal before the Court of Appeal. Ejiofor characterized these claims as unfounded, illogical, and potentially damaging to the ongoing legal proceedings.

While noting that he would typically ignore such accusations, Ejiofor said he felt compelled to respond to prevent repeated falsehoods from gaining perceived credibility. He issued a direct public notice to the named individuals, demanding they immediately publish any supporting evidence for their allegations.

Ejiofor warned that failure to do so would leave him no choice but to pursue all available legal remedies to hold them accountable under the law. He emphasized that reckless falsehoods crossing legal boundaries carry consequences, concluding with the phrase "To be forewarned is to be forearmed."

Ejiofor led Kanu's legal team from around 2015 until a restructuring in late 2023 (with Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, assuming leadership in 2022), during which time he handled multiple cases related to IPOB members and secured notable outcomes, including bail in earlier proceedings and an appellate discharge and acquittal in 2022 (later affected by subsequent developments). He has continued to identify as IPOB's lawyer in public statements and commentary on related matters, including recent criticisms of sit-at-home directives and other IPOB issues in early 2026.
