Peoples Gazette Reports Germany Rejects Femi Fani-Kayode as Ambassador
In a developing diplomatic story making waves in Nigerian media, Peoples Gazette has exclusively reported that the German government has rejected President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany.
According to the report, Tinubu approved the posting of 65 ambassadorial nominees on March 6, 2026, assigning Fani-Kayode to Germany (with Reno Omokri posted to Mexico, among others). However, the German authorities allegedly turned down the nomination on March 13, citing Fani-Kayode’s “erratic behaviour” and a history of divisive, ethnocentric, tribalistic, and religious fundamentalist comments that they described as “destabilising.”
The Peoples Gazette article, authored by Abiodun Sanusi and dated March 30, 2026, claims the rejection stems from “rabid ethnic and religious slurs.” It highlights concerns over Fani-Kayode’s controversial public statements in Nigeria, which critics argue could undermine diplomatic relations. The report includes a photo of Fani-Kayode alongside another figure and has circulated widely on social media platforms, including X and Instagram, where it has sparked intense debate.
Femi Fani-Kayode, a vocal supporter of President Tinubu and a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, has long been known for his fiery commentary on ethnic, religious, and political issues. His nomination as ambassador-designate initially drew mixed reactions, with some praising the appointment of a high-profile non-career diplomat, while others raised questions about his suitability for a sensitive international role.
Earlier in March 2026, a diaspora group called the Global Coalition for Security & Democracy in Nigeria (GCSDN) had already written to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, urging Germany to reject the nomination and describing Fani-Kayode as a “misfit.” This petition appears to have amplified existing concerns.
Fani-Kayode has strongly denied the reports, describing them as “fake news” orchestrated by political opponents. In statements reported by Punch Newspapers and Vanguard, he insisted that Germany did not reject his nomination and accused critics of spreading falsehoods to undermine his appointment.
As of now, there has been no official confirmation from either the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the German government regarding the alleged rejection. Diplomatic processes for ambassadorial postings typically involve agreement (formal approval by the host country), and rejections or delays can occur for various reasons without public fanfare.
