The Aggressive Shift And Strategic Repositioning Of IPOB To Meet Institutional Standard Is A Game Changer

The Aggressive Shift And Strategic Repositioning Of IPOB To Meet Institutional Standard Is A Game Changer

Monday, 1st June, 2026

For the first time post extraordinary rendition, there is a fresh breath and heart warming atmosphere surrounding the Indigenous People of Biafra movement. The reason for this aura is simply because the Directorate of State (DOS) of IPOB seems to have finally found its elixir. It was, regrettably, the procrastination and blind loyalty of the DOS to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu that enabled glory hunters to sow whirlwind using “Onyendu said this or that” phrase.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of IPOB, no doubt. His position in IPOB is not contestable and he deserves respect. But absolute respect corrupts absolutely. There is no doubt that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu knows this too well. Perhaps, the person that formed an organization that has an administrative leadership that he is a member of must know this. The person that formed an organization that stretched beyond Biafra and Nigeria already knows the limitations of defunct Biafra under General Ojukwu and MASSOB under Ralph Uwazurike.

Let us not get it twisted. Most times, we focus extensively and excessively on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on his actions and inactions. We never paid attention to the failure of the DOS. The failure of the DOS was the delay in assuming its institutional position.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu did say that the current leadership —the DOS — was chosen by Chukwuabiama, not any mortal. Yet, he asked the question: will you disappoint me? It is not possible to explain how we got here in IPOB. What was the relationship between the siblings and Uche Mefor or some members of DOS? Was the influence of his siblings disturbing to him and did he expect the DOS to step up and be in charge?

Part of the weakness of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as we have seen, is his inability to turn down his siblings no matter what it is. It is possible that he expected a formidable DOS even in his presence but found them lagging. Hence, they left him no choice but to push them hard and against the wall. Perhaps, as things got way out of hand, they turned out not exactly the way he planned it. He is only a human.

The absolute truth is that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is pushing himself where both his lawyers and siblings are incapable of helping him. A keen observer devoid of emotions can easily see this. He is sinking himself and this will help the DOS to easily spread the ideology of Biafra as a movement built as an institution rather than around a strong person.

This ideological shift is a game changer in that it will ensure continuity regardless of what happens to anyone in the struggle and at the same time ensure the survival of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu since his life sentence will become immaterial and counter-productive to Nigerian government’s intended objective.

The IPOB movement is a community movement, not a personal or family business. Never again should the leadership sleep walk or snail walk as that is a code for agent provocateurs, criminals, power hungry family members and glory hunters to have operational space.
