Zelensky Says Talks With Trump Could ‘Change a Lot’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday he held an important phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump and that the two agreed to meet in New York this week.
In a post on X, Zelensky said they “got through a lot” and that the planned meeting “could change a lot.” He added that “there is diplomatic momentum.” Both leaders are expected in New York for the U.N. General Assembly.
Zelensky thanked Trump for the recent visit to Kyiv by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, saying they reviewed key details and saw conditions in Ukraine firsthand. He called the peace track Ukraine’s top priority and said there are ideas for de-escalation steps as well as energy security, food security, and protection of civilian lives. “We are working together with the American team and are ready to take really serious steps,” he wrote.
He also thanked Trump for signing into law the Russia sanctions bill associated with the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. “We all concur there must be peace,” Zelensky said.
No detailed agenda or exact meeting time has been announced. The talks come as U.S. officials continue efforts to revive negotiations over the war that began in February 2022.
