The Harmful Effects Of Drug Abuse And The Race To Destroy Biafran Youths

Drug abuse or substance misuse refers to the use of drugs in quantities or ways that are harmful to the individual or others. For clarity, drug abuse implies using illegal drugs such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana, methamphetamines, and club drugs; misuse of prescription medicines or over-the-counter medicines. The latter involves using medication issued to someone or using medication in ways not intended for them to be used like in overdose to get high.

EFFECTS OF DRUG ABUSE

These include harmful effects like chronic social, physical, emotional, and job-related problems. High consumption or overdose tolerance due to frequent use. Dependence, which is the after effect of overdose tolerance, is attained for an individual to function normally. An individual at this level risks addiction. Once addictive, it can lead to mental and physical instability which will climax into a risky behavior. Therefore, drug abuse, in a layman’s understanding, is to medically and socially abandon norms leading to negative consequences for the abuser and people around them.

SOURCES OF HARD DRUGS IN BIAFRALAND

The strategic location of Biafraland close to the Gulf of Guinea (an international trade route) as well as the porous border of Nigeria makes Biafraland strategically attractive for both international and local drug peddlers. The influx of deported migrated citizens, with foreign connection, meant the flourishing of drug cartels who find Biafraland unique as a transit hub as well as a destination. Therefore, international sources feed imported drugs such as cocaine from across the globe, while local sources provide locally made drugs like cannabis (Indian hemp).

The rate of consumption of illicit drugs and the attendant negative consequences among Biafran youths is alarming as it is very troubling. It is a dangerous trend that portends disaster if not arrested at the moment. It is disheartening to watch young Biafrans at their productive age waste away. It is not rocket science to project that in a decade to come, unless something drastic is done, many young men and women of reproductive age will die untimely, leaving behind surviving aged parents.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) keeps alerting Biafrans at home and in diaspora regarding the urgent need for all hands to be on deck to brainstorm and proffer solution. Any society that loses her productive population to drugs, also is crime infested. Addiction whittles creativity and breeds chaos. We must not rest on our oars or leave any stone unturned until we rid our inner cities of hard drugs, and make our young and youthful population productive.
