Peter Obi Addresses the Continued Detention of Nnamdi Kanu

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has expressed that the Nigerian government's continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is illogical.

Obi emphasized his support for seeking a political resolution not just for Kanu but also for other similar situations across the nation.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, he raised concerns about the reasons behind Kanu's imprisonment, specifically questioning the justification for holding him due to insults directed at government officials.

When asked if he would advocate for a political solution regarding Kanu's case, Obi responded, “Why is he still being held? It just doesn’t add up to me. Some say it’s because of vulgar language. I haven’t seen it.

“But to be honest, if I were president, it wouldn’t matter to me if someone called me a thief or an idiot, which they do now. My responsibility as a leader is to ensure that the common person can put food on their table.”

On whether he would approach similar issues throughout the country in a consistent manner, the Labour Party presidential candidate stated, “If there are individuals I can engage, I will have those conversations… For instance, if there’s a bandit operating in the northeast tomorrow, I’d reach out to him.

“But the goal is to establish a dialogue that says this needs to stop, and then I would address it firmly.”
