Strict Security Measures Intensify as Court Permits Only 10 Attendees for Nnamdi Kanu's Trial Resumption
The trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resumed today, Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, under strict attendance restrictions.
Justice James K. Omotosho, who is overseeing the case, has approved a list of only ten individuals from the defense side who are allowed to be present in the courtroom.
The list, which was obtained by our correspondent, comprises eight senior lawyers and two close associates of Nnamdi Kanu. The authorized legal team includes several Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), such as Kanu G. Agabi, and Kanu legal team.
Also permitted to attend are Hon. Obi Aguocha, a member of the House of Representatives, and Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of the IPOB leader.
The court session is scheduled to commence
at 9:00 a.m., following the previous hearing in which the Federal Government concluded its case, and the defense was instructed to submit its written address regarding a no-case submission within 14 days.
Today's proceedings are anticipated to be crucial, as the court continues to assess whether the prosecution has established a prima facie case against the defendant.
Meanwhile, journalists and members of the public remain prohibited from attending the trial, a decision that has raised ongoing concerns regarding transparency and press freedom in the management of this high-profile case.
Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention since June 2021 after his rendition from Kenya, with his trial attracting both national and international attention.
