BREAKING NEWS: Court Denies Nnamdi Kanu's Medical Transfer, Orders Independent Health Probe in Abuja
The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, has rejected an urgent request to transfer Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from DSS custody to the National Hospital Abuja for critical medical treatment. Instead, the court ordered the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to form a five-member specialist panel to examine Kanu within eight days, with a report due by October 4, 2025, to verify his reported life-threatening conditions.
Kanu's counsel, led by SAN Kanu Agabi, pressed for an order transferring him to the National Hospital Abuja for urgent care, citing life-threatening conditions like critically low potassium (risking cardiac arrest), multi-organ failure risks (liver, kidney, pancreas, prostate, heart), an armpit lump needing biopsy, and nasal obstruction requiring surgery—exacerbated by alleged rendition torture.
Court's Decision: The transfer was denied, with Justice Omotosho citing unresolved discrepancies between Kanu's independent medical reports (from Prof. Austin Agaji's team and a prior MDCN review) and DSS counter-affidavits claiming stable in-house treatment.
Instead, the judge directed the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to form a five-member independent panel of specialists (cardiologist, endocrinologist, ENT surgeon, oncologist, and general physician) to examine Kanu at the DSS facility within 8 days and submit findings to the court by October 4, 2025. The court stressed balancing health rights with security, noting DSS opposition due to "adequate" internal care and escape risks
This echoes September 23's MDCN confirmation of severe issues but builds on AGF Lateef Fagbemi's push for neutrality. Kanu's brother, Emmanuel, and team argued denial endangers his life under constitutional protections.
The July 14, 2025, submission claims the prosecution's five DSS witnesses and evidence fail to prove a prima facie case, seeking discharge.Today's Outcome: No ruling; deferred to prioritize health. Justice Omotosho indicated it would follow the NMA report, with no fixed date but likely early October post-October 4. Prosecution, via SAN Adegboyega Awomolo, insists Kanu's broadcasts incite violence, linking to Southeast unrest.
