Urgent Alert: Assassination Attempt on IPOB Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in DSS Custody Sparks Global Outrage
In a shocking development that has ignited fears of foul play within Nigeria's secretive security apparatus, reports emerged late Friday alleging that a Department of State Services (DSS) agent attempted to assassinate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), while he was held in solitary confinement at the agency's headquarters in Abuja. The incident, described by IPOB sources as a premeditated attack disguised as an internal altercation, has prompted warnings of worldwide confrontation if Kanu's safety is not guaranteed.
According to information circulating rapidly among IPOB leadership and supporters, the assailant a newly assigned DSS operative tasked with guarding Kanu allegedly stormed the IPOB’s leader cell with lethal intent. Eyewitness accounts from within the facility, relayed anonymously to IPOB channels, claim the agent physically assaulted Kanu, including kicks aimed at inflicting severe harm. Other DSS officers reportedly intervened, physically dragging their colleague away to prevent further violence, highlighting the chaotic scene inside the high-security detention center.
"This was no mere scuffle; it was a clear assassination bid," an IPOB spokesperson stated in a widely shared online alert. "The DSS and elements opposed to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's freedom are orchestrating his murder under the guise of a 'misunderstanding' with an officer. We demand accountability the perpetrator must face consequences, and the DSS must ensure nothing happens to our leader in their custody. Failure to do so will unleash a new wave of confrontation from IPOB worldwide."
The allegations surfaced just hours after Kanu's ongoing terrorism trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja took another dramatic turn. On October 24, 2025, Kanu, who has been in DSS custody since his abduction and extraordinary rendition from Kenya, dismissed his legal team and insisted on self-representation, accusing the agency of withholding critical case files and obstructing justice. The court adjourned proceedings amid heightened tensions, with Kanu's defense previously raising concerns over his deteriorating health and access to medical care.
This purported attack comes against a backdrop of escalating friction surrounding Kanu's detention. Earlier this month, on October 20, pro-democracy activists led by human rights campaigner Omoyele Sowore staged the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protests across Abuja and other cities, demanding Kanu's unconditional release. The demonstrations were met with heavy-handed responses from security forces, including tear gas deployments and arrests, including that of Kanu's special counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, and his brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu. Kanu's legal team has repeatedly accused the DSS of plotting orchestrated violence to justify crackdowns on peaceful gatherings, including a foiled scheme around the Federal High Court on October 16.
