The State of Georgia in the United States has conferred honorary citizenship on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, in a ceremonial recognition of his influence and contributions.

The proclamation, signed by Georgia Secretary of State  Brad Raffensperger on January 16, 2026, declares Kanu an "Honorary Georgia Citizen" and also designates him as a "Goodwill Ambassador" from the state to the world. The document emphasizes that he should be afforded courtesies as such an ambassador in his travels or wherever he may reside.

This honorary citizenship is a symbolic honor awarded to individuals deemed of exceptional merit or notable impact. It carries no legal privileges associated with full U.S. citizenship, such as the right to vote, obtain a U.S. passport, claim legal immunity, or access other rights reserved for actual citizens or residents.

The proclamation was accepted on Kanu's behalf by Uche Ajulu, a former Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, during a presentation in Georgia.

The recognition comes amid Kanu's ongoing detention in Nigeria, where he faces legal proceedings related to his activism for Biafran self-determination. Supporters view the Georgia honor as a significant international endorsement of his cause and a moral boost, highlighting global attention to his case despite domestic challenges.

This development follows a similar gesture toward another prominent Nigerian Igbo figure. In September 2025, former presidential candidate Peter Obi was conferred honorary citizenship of Georgia during events tied to Black Congressional Week in Washington, D.C. Obi's honor similarly served as a ceremonial acknowledgment of his stature and influence.

The latest proclamation for Kanu has sparked widespread discussion on social media platforms, particularly among pro-Biafra advocates and diaspora communities, who interpret it as affirmation of his global relevance and a call for justice in his situation.

While symbolic, such state-level honors underscore how subnational entities in the U.S. can spotlight international figures and issues through formal gestures of recognition.
