BIAFRAN SELF-DETERMINATION: How The Desired Success Is Hugely Dependent On Consistently Working According To Patterns

Self-determination is a natural right of human existence and fundamental to human ideology in bringing about desired change against oppression.

Historically, from the beginning of man's existence, man has had the desire to conquer, oppress, exploit, and dominate a fellow man, and likewise, man has continued to resist such intentions against his fellow man.

Looking at this historical perspective, everyone can justify the Biafran struggle as the Biafran People's natural right to seek self-determination, which is where they believe they can fulfill their own destiny.

The reason the UN recognizes it as a fundamental human right is that people have the right to demand self-determination when they feel they are no longer safe or protected in the place or government they find themselves under at a particular time.

The people of Biafra, the largest ethnic group predominantly occupying the Eastern Region of the country created by the British Government called Nigeria through the controversial amalgamation of 1914, have continued to pursue this cause. The old Eastern Region, predominantly occupied by the Igbo ethnic nation, began to embark on this journey for self-determination and self-rule in 1967, following the post-independence election crisis, which led to the January 1966 coup and the counter-coup, which led to the brutal killing of General Aguiyi Ironsi. These actions were all hatched and executed by the British Government in collaboration with Muslim Northern Nigeria.

Following the counter-coup, Igbo people living in the northern part of Nigeria were gruesomely massacred in their thousands.

All efforts to quench the crisis proved abortive.

As the people of the Igbo ethnic nation were seen facing existential threats, the natural need to demand separation from the inorganic country created by British imperialists, targeting the Igbo ethnic group, became necessary. As the killings of Easterners (Igbos) continued in Northern Nigeria, the need for self-preservation became necessary to save Igbos from existential threats. This burning desire eventually led to the declaration of the former Eastern Region of Nigeria as a separate and independent nation called Biafra by the then military governor of the Eastern Region, Lt. Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, in 1967. The struggle for self-determination and self-rule began and is still ongoing.

Historically, self-determination has never been an easy task. Those who have undergone it tell bitter stories because the journey has always been accompanied by heavy price and sacrifice. Therefore, the Biafran case cannot be an exception. That is the reason the Biafran quest for self-determination is not like every other one that many countries have gone through. Therefore, it calls for a strong institution to drive the struggle.

IPOB, at the center stage of the Biafran struggle, has done marvelously well by strategically institutionalizing IPOB with the Directorate of State (DOS) as the institutional body that drives the IPOB global movement for the restoration of the sovereign State of Biafra.

This calls for conscious defense against external and internal enemies to maintain IPOB's non-violent approach until Biafra is achieved.

However, in every struggle for people's self-determination, there must be enemies, both internal and external, working to destroy it. But what is required of the agitating group is to build a wall of strategic intelligence that outsmarts known and unknown enemies from penetrating the heart of the struggle.

In our case, it requires a strong institution and levels of information passage.

It requires constant scrutiny of the administrative principal officers in order to avoid information leakage.

It also requires checks and balances to maintain a level of accountability in the struggle.

Stable leadership: Biafran self-determination requires leadership cohesion that makes them work as a team. Working as a team can prevent external enemies from coming in to destabilize the struggle.

Consistency and dedication to the pursuit of the mother project must be the ultimate focus of IPOB leadership and its conscious followers until we arrive at our destination.

Therefore, putting all these factors together will place the struggle at an advantage over the enemies, both internal and external, in their attempts to destroy the struggle.

Welfare and youth mobilization must be strengthened through a coordinated media approach and the application of conscious people to queue into the movement.

Strategically, a security approach is very crucial to checkmate the advances of our enemies from using our people to commit crimes and using such acts to destroy the face and image of the movement.
