BREAKING: Activist Omoyele Sowore Remanded to Kuje Prison by Federal High Court in Abuja

Justice Muhammad Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of prominent human rights activist, journalist, and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential aspirant Omoyele Sowore to the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The court rejected Sowore’s application for the judge to recuse himself from the case. Sowore faces charges under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act for allegedly making derogatory remarks against President Bola Tinubu, including referring to him as a “criminal” in social media posts from last year. Sowore has pleaded not guilty, describing the charges as an attack on free speech and political persecution.

Sowore’s legal team had sought the judge’s recusal, citing alleged bias, but the request was denied. The activist was subsequently remanded pending further proceedings.

Dozens of supporters gathered outside the court premises, holding placards and chanting slogans demanding his immediate release. His party, the AAC, has strongly condemned the ruling, accusing the judiciary of being used for political targeting ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This development follows earlier reports of Sowore’s bail being revoked in a related matter over failure to appear in court. Sowore, founder of Sahara Reporters, has a long history of activism and has been arrested multiple times in the past for his criticism of successive Nigerian governments.
